A plan must be prepared, approved and implemented in the following scenarios:

  • Assembly occupancies
  • Care occupancies
  • Care and treatment occupancies
  • Detention occupancies
  • Residential occupancies where the occupant load is over 10
  • Retirement homes
  • Businesses and personal services where the occupant load is over 300
  • Mercantile occupancies where the occupant load is over 300
  • Buildings 4 storeys or more, including storeys below grade
  • Outdoor tire storage yards
  • High hazard occupancies having an occupant load exceeding 25
  • Medium hazard occupancies having an occupant load exceeding 100
  • Low hazard occupancies having an occupant load exceeding 300
  • Buildings where quantities of flammable and combustible liquids exceed 500 L in total or exceed 250 L of Class I Liquids

Information is provided in a user-friendly format to facilitate implementation at the facility and includes the following:

  • Identification of a fire safety committee
  • Duties and responsibilities of the fire safety committee
  • The appointment and organization of designated supervisory staff to carry out fire safety duties
  • The training of supervisory staff and other occupants in their responsibilities for fire safety
  • Emergency procedures to be used in the event of fire emergencies
  • Methods for holding fire drills
  • A summary of relevant information to be provided to the local fire department
  • Identification of the controls in place for fire hazards
  • Fire safety systems description and requirements for inspection and maintenance of systems within the building

  • Conducting building audits to gather required information in preparing fire safety plans
